General Body Meeting 4/13

At our next Society for Green Business General Body Meeting we will be holding elections for the 2010 - 2011 academic school year, unveiling the official SGB t-shirt, announcing nominations for Smith Leadership Awards and letting everyone know about the jam-packed April events for Earth Month!!

If you are unable to attend tomorrow's meeting you may still run for a position; simply email terpsgb@gmail.com with a copy of your speech and position you choose to run for. We want to urge all members to consider running for a position, even if you feel you have limited experience. The Society for Green Business is searching for organized, creative individuals with a vision to complete a set of goals. Listed below are the positions available and a brief description of the tasks and responsibilities.

President
The President of the Society for Green Business serves as the face and leader of the organization. One must be passionate and knowledgeable about current and future environmental issues and possess motivational, organizational, and creativity qualities. The President represents the organization to the public. It is his or her responsibility to schedule meetings with other groups, businesses, and leaders throughout the University, environmental, and business community.

The President delegates and assists the efforts of the other Vice Presidents. It is important to communicate responsibilities clearly and often to executives, but also allow for each Vice President to perform the job role based on his or her standards. The President sets the goals, events, and tone of the overall organization. Additionally, the President must attend monthly SUSA President’s meetings and interact with other SUSA club Presidents. There are a large amount of responsibilities and time commitments holding the Presidency position, but the rewards and opportunities that come with the position are endless.
Vice President
The Vice President of the Society for Green Business works closely with the President. It is his or her job role to run weekly meetings, schedule internal and external meetings, and meet directly with the General Body. The Vice President is responsible for maintaining the email account. Depending on the current executive job roles, it is also the Vice President’s job to maintain the website. The Vice President assists other executives in their job functions. He or she must act as President in the event that the current President is unable to lead the club. The Vice President is the communication line between members and the executives.
Vice President of Finance
As the Vice President of Finance, I am responsible for overseeing all internal funds of the club. This encompasses maintaining the clubs bank account, bargaining for reimbursements, and budgeting for the next fiscal year. This means dealing directly with treasures from Chevy Chase Bank, the Smith Undergraduate Student Association (SUSA), and the Student Government Association (SGA) respectively. Other parts of my responsibilities include developing, implementing, and assisting with all fundraising events. As a byproduct of these responsibilities, it is necessary that you prepare budgets to allocate funds.
Vice President of Advocacy
The VP of Advocacy also has the position of SUSA Representative. You have to go to SUSA Assembly meeting every other week, and interact with other SUSA reps to promote SUSA initiatives. You also have the opportunity of improving the Smith community by proposing bills that can be passed. VP of Advocacy can determine what ever initiative he/she wants to launch for the semester. These initiatives are focused towards businesses on and off campus to help improve their sustainability. I spend about 3-4 hours a week planning, booking meetings, and organizing the initiatives. To be good at this position, you must be extremely passionate about the position, and be creative in thinking of ideas. You must also be very persistent because there can be a lot of hardship when an initiative does not work out. Usually, I launch about 2 to 3 initiatives a semester.
Vice President of Marketing
The Vice President of Marketing is responsible for helping to determine the overall goals of the Society for Green Business, and to guide the marketing operations of the club.
The VP works closely with the Chair to creatively manage the SGB 'brand' name, expand awareness of Green Business principles, and promote networking/speaking events.

The Vice President of Marketing acts as head of the Marketing Committee (including its subdivision, the Design Team) and is the liason between committee members and the executive board. The VP establishes goals and benchmarks for the committee to reach and corresponds with the Chair, Vice Chair, and Head Designer. The VP seeks to implement efficient and effective marketing strategies to promote the club and establish a recognizable brand across campus. Before each committee meeting, the VP updates the Chair, Vice Chair, and Head Designer on recent news and upcoming goals.
Vice President of Events
Schedule speakers for upcoming semester; Surrounding businesses, Campus staff and faculty, Collaborate with other SUSA clubs to do combined events.

List of some duties for each speaker event: Confirm speaker, E-mail SUSA VP of events to confirm room reservations (2 weeks in advance), Give directions to speaker- make sure parking details are included, Have someone by door to greet him/her, Order food in advance from three brothers, collaborate with VP of finance to pay for it (must send him budget for event 2 weeks in advance), make sure there are drinks, napkins, cups, plates, tables, tablecloths (utensils if called for)-should be clean not messy food, Introductory speech for speaker, Gift.

Organize several social events-about 3 per semester (usually at thirsty turtle); Speak to turtle employees a couple weeks in advance to make reservations and create budget to give to VP of Finance.

Sign up for community service events. Frequent communication with President to make sure all plans are running smoothly. Communicate with VP of Marketing too see how they are promoting our events. Communicate with VP of Advocacy (they often do their own events but may need assistance). Keep committee member involved: (Utilize committee to solve problems club may be facing, Ideas for future events, Help with current events.) Meet with executive board a couple times a month to discuss progress of club towards goals and change strategy and execution as necessary. Create an estimated budget for events in following semester to give to VP of Finance.
Vice President of Fundraising
The Vice President of Fundraising is responsible for planning, organizing and overseeing all fundraising activities to promote awareness of our club and encourage donations. Past activites have included profit-sharing nights with local restaurants, working at athletic concessions and selling tickets to Fe concerts. This person needs to be friendly and innovative to be able to lead a committee that can actively network and pursue money-making opportunities. This position works closley with the Executive President and Vice President of Events.

This is an extremely important role in our club and I hope that there are a few interested parties out there! Remember you can still run even if you are not able to attend the meeting tomorrow by sending me a short blurb about your qualifications.
Historian
Takes and collects photos from SGB events and uploads them onto the club's Facebook page. Is also responsible for sending out Facebook messages when needed.

This event is part of CEO Smith, a dynamic new speaker series designed specifically for the community to learn from leading business practitioners and innovators. The event will be held on Wednesday, March 10th in room 1524 in Van Munching Hall from 5:30pm to 6:45pm

Hear Dennis Wraase talk about his views about energy investments and climate change as a former President of an energy holdings company that serviced more than 1.9 million customers.

Univ. of MD installs solar panels

The University of Maryland has announce the installation of 20 new solar panels on the roof of the North Campus Diner. These solar panels will be used to generate 1/3 of the Diner's hot water. The University's solar panel initiative will help accomplish the long-term goal of reducing the campus' carbon footprint to zero by the year 2050.

“When completed, it is projected to save about $1.7 million annually in avoided energy costs — nearly 5 million kilowatt-hours and 2.5 million gallons of water,” Facilities’ Conservation Manager Susan Corry said.

The University is expected to install solar panels on the roof of Cole Field House soon. Other potential facilities to receive the solar panels include the Art-Sociology Building, Plant Sciences Building and Easton Hall.

SGB Donates to Haiti

The Society for Green Business has agreed to donate $100.00 of the organizationsbudget towards disaster relief efforts in Haiti.

We join a movement being led by the Student Government Association,American Red Cross Club, and the Caribbean Student Association to help raise $10,000. It is our hope, that theState of Maryland and the Maryland Emergency Management Agency will match ourefforts to provide the much-needed relief to the Haitian community at thiscrucial time.

Some organizations that we are considering donating to include:American Red Cross, Oxfam America, Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, Oxfam America andUNICEF. We will keep you posted!

Welcome back everyone!!

Hope you had a great break and was able to recharge your batteries! If you took a winter class then you won't have to worry about any rust to deal with!! SGB is excitied about the upcoming semester and we have great events planned for everyone!! Make sure to check back periodically for updates on General Body Meetings and Events!

Currently, SGB is looking for any interested and available members who would like to represent the Society of Green Business at the Smith First Look Fair 2010 on February 2, 2010. We encourage our members to be able to answer questions perspective members have about SGB, taking students' contact information and most importantly sharing your personal experience in SGB. On Tuesday February 10, 2009, the Society for Green Business will be joined by Monica Shutte, Director of Undergraduate Student Programming at the Robert H. Smith School of business to present on strategies for highlighting and accentuating green aspects of your resume. With competition growing each day in the current economic recession, this will be a very useful and informative workshop for improving your marketability to employers, so don't miss out!

The event will be held at 7 PM in VMH 1206. Please bring a copy of your resume, cover letter, and any questions you may have for Ms. Shutte. Invite your friends, old and new (that you just met in your new classes), to join!

Also, don't forget $5 for dues for the Spring 09' collection.

1/25 Spring 09' Beginnings

Today would be the day to cram in all those last minute winter break goals- the spring semester starts tomorrow! The SGB, however, will not be congregating this first week of school. Instead bring all your semester ideas and enthusiasm to our welcome event next Tuesday, February 3rd. We will be hosting Olivia Millar, director of Sustainability and Workplace Strategies.

I have also posted a basic calendar of events to the website. Check the calendar every so often as I will continue to add more events as the details for them are finalized. This will be the best way to keep up to speed with the club as well as take advantage of as many opportunities as possible.

12/9 Happy Hour and Green Dining Services

From 5:30 to 7:30 pm today SGB will be hosting an end-of-semester happy hour at the Thirsty Turtle on Rt. 1 (Next to Potbelly's). Stop by for a well-deserved break from final projects and exams to hang out with the group.

This week SGB is also conducting surveys at the South Campus Diner in an effort to help Maryland Dining Services go green. Volunteers are needed to administer surveys during lunch hours (12 to 2 pm) and dinner hours (around 5 pm to 7 pm). To volunteer to help out or for more information contact our VP of Advocacy Tian Tian Feng at tfeng@umd.edu. The initiatives are dependent on our ability to follow through with the survey process; volunteers are highly valued and needed.

11/18 Brown Paper Bag Dinner/Advocacy Update

On Tuesday, November 18 at 7 PM in 1206 VMH, SGB will be holding a general body meeting to discuss plans and goals for helping the campus go green. The meeting will be run by the advocacy committee, but member participation is strongly encouraged. Dinner will not be provided but, if you choose to do so, bring your own meal to eat during the assembly (Lunchables cheese pizzas are strongly encouraged).

Also, SUSA is collecting canned, non-perishable food for a Thanksgiving season food drive. Please bring as much as you can to the meeting Tuesday as the club that collects the most cans wins a prize!

11/11 General Body Meeting and the Election

On Tuesday November 11, 2008, the Society for Green Business will be visited by sustainable events planner Lori Hill. Hill, whom is a Maryland Alumni, will share her experience and goals of her sustainable events planning company, Lori Hill Events. The meeting, which will occur at 7 pm in VMH 1206, will also be accompanied by a light dinner.

We will be holding a general body meeting at 7 PM in 1206 VMH (Near the colossal lecture hall where you took/will take Accounting I).

For tonight's meeting, SGB will be hosting a speaker from Clean Currents LLC. Clean Currents is a clean energy broker/aggregator located in the DC area. Pizza and punch will be provided from Three Brothers Pizzeria, mama mia!

Please try to make it. Although the weather today isn't...optimal..well ...if Bambi taught us anything it's that if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. Dress warm!

Be sure to bring your $5 for dues if you haven't done so. This will cover WELL MORE than $5 worth of food/drink/fun.

Mission Statement

The Society for Green Business seeks to build a community within the Smith School of Business as well as the university to promote environmental awareness. Our goal is to promote sustainable business values by introducing students to new and innovative ways in which businesses have adopted green practices, encouraging students to value environmental concerns, and advocating for green measures at the university.

The Spring 2010 membership requirements are:

Attend 3 General Body Meetings
Attend 1 Professional Event
Join a committee OR Attend 1 Fundraising Event and 1 Community Service Event
Payment of Dues ($10 per year)

Meetings and events are usually held Tuesdays at 7 pm in Van Munching Hall.

An important part of what makes the Society for Green Business a successful and effective organization is its use of committees for delegating responsibilities. Each committee is used for the planning and implementation of a particular club function. Membership in a committee should be based on an individual's interests and skills to ensure continued participation as well as an enjoyable experience.

At the beginning of the academic semester, each committee will elect two leaders responsible for organizing, running, and reporting on committee progress to the executive board. These are the "chair" and "co-chair" respectively. Both positions are extremely important but the effort and cooperation of the committee as a whole will signify the effectiveness of SGB in that area.

Here are the committees and a brief description of the goals of each:

Advocacy Committee:
The Advocacy Committee is a group of dedicated students working to provide complementary sustainability consulting to businesses and organizations. In order to help companies be more environmentally friendly, the Advocacy Committee formulates specific strategies and implements a thorough plan of action to reduce environmental impact, while cutting costs. Each plan is tailored to the need of the individual client, and quantifiable data is taken to measure the progress. Specific targets include energy efficiency, paper reduction, and recycling initiatives. The committee will also support on- going projects in marketing and research. Past Advocacy projects include waste stream analysis for Cornerstone Grill and Bar, recycling initiative for Van Munching Hall, and marketing research for Maryland Dining Services. The client for the Fall 2009 was the Bozzuto Group.

Events Committee:
The Events Committee plans, organizes, and runs professional, social and community service events for the club. Membership entails an assigned role for professional events, which may include check-in, seating and presentation setup, supplies/information organization, catering and food acquisition, etc. The Events Committee is essential to building the SGB experience by providing meaningful and relevant events that provide members a chance to connect with each other, establish contacts within the green industry, and learn about green issues. Past Events include speakers from General Electric, International Business Machines, and the U.S. Green Building Council.

Fundraising Committee:
The Fundraising Committee oversees the financial transactions and condition of the club. Its members develops methods for generating new capital for the organization as well as ways of investing profits for club and university improvement. Past Fundraising projects include working with local College Park restaurants, co-sponsoring music performances at Sante Fe Cafe, and running concessions during UMD campus-wide events.

Marketing Committee:
The Marketing Committee promotes club awareness and events through poster creation, flyer disbursement, etc. This committee is essential to building the brand of SGB throughout the Smith School of Business, across the entire university, and to a variety of businesses. One of the major goals of the Marketing Committee is to increase membership by connecting with students, faculty, and business professionals. Members continually develop new and innovate ways to help publicize SGB and its actions to the community.

The Design Team is a subcommittee within the Marketing Committee that specializes in visual advertising and is responsible for campus-wide chalking. The Head Designer supervises the members of the Design Team in order to increase the effectiveness of SGB advertising and ensure that all marketing materials creatively display the values of the organization. One of the major past projects of the Design Team was the creation of the official club logo and slogan.

The University of Maryland has installed 20 solar panels on the roof of the North Campus Diner. The solar panels will be used to generate 1/3 of the Diner's hot water which reinforces the University's stance to reduce the campus' carbon footprint to zero by 2050. The University expects to save $1.7 million annually in energy costs and 2.5 million gallons of water.

The Society for Green Business is an organization in the Robert H. Smith School of Business and is a member of the Smith Undergraduate Student Association (SUSA). Our mission is to help students learn and understand the benefits and opportunities of "going green." This includes methods in which businesses become more energy efficient and general ways to incorporate sustainability into daily life. The Society for Green Business is a great place to meet corporations, entrepreneurs, and students through our many professional events, private speakers and social mixers!

A committed member of the Society of Green Business will:

Learn how to create a "green resume" and impress potential employers.

Meet successful entrepreneurs who have started their own sustainability business

Learn about and meet representatives from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

Be able to Join a Committee based on their interests

Interact and meet with established corporations, such as, International Business Machines (IBM), General Electric (GE), Hewlett Packard (HP) and T-Boone Pickens

Participate in tree-plantings through the Casey Tree Organization

Have the opportunity to hold important leadership positions

Make new friends through social mixers, concerts, and barbeques!
